WELCOME
BreastBuddies
has been specially put together
for all breast cancer patients
and the persons close to them.
May this site offer
invaluable information and
support to all its
users.
Coping patterns are as
individual as each person
themselves. The amount and type
of information a woman wants
after being diagnosed are
different. Here you can find all
the essential
information regarding breast
cancer.
BreastBuddies
offers a
local community forum
where patients, family members
and friends will find support
and answers. The forum is a safe
place where you can open your
heart, share your ups and downs,
or just read up on experiences,
even when you don't feel or look
your best.
An important aspect of fighting
this unseen enemy is to realize
that you and your loved ones
will experience grief. Loss is a
close relative of cancer – the
loss of a breast, loss of
control, loss of time and
energy. Understanding your
treatment and feelings can help
give back a sense of control. As
you gain more knowledge of what
is happening to you and why, you
can face the changes that the
disease brings and emotional
healing can begin.
Please keep coming back for
updates and new events!!
It is important to create
awareness and educate women (of
all ages) on breast cancer and
the different types and stages
of the disease.
Lately more and more young
woman, in their 20’s and early
30’s, are being diagnosed.
High-risk individuals are women
over the age of 40, women with a
personal history of breast
cancer and those who have a
family history of breast cancer.
Women should develop a routine
and do monthly self-examination
for lumps and changes in their
breasts. If anything unusual is
detected they should consult a
medical practitioner
immediately. Breast cancer is
most treatable in the early
stages and chances of survival
are high.
REMEMBER
·breast cancer usually presents
as a lump in the breast that is
painless
·
nine out of ten breast lumps are
benign
and not cancer
·
cancer of the breast is today a
curable disease
if detected and treated
early
·
it is
not difficult to examine
your own breasts
Breast self examination
(BSE) is to be
performed each month in addition
to an annual mammogram or a
clinical exam. Knowing your
cyclical changes, what is normal
for you, and what regular
monthly changes in the breast
feel like is the best way to
keep an eye on your breast
health. Breast tissue extends
from under your nipple and
areola up toward your armpit.
What You Need: ·
A mirror which lets you see both
breasts ·
Privacy
What to look out for ·
A lump (varying in size from a
marble to a tennis ball) ·
Puckering, tethering or dimpling
of the skin.
Puckering is where a cancer may invade the
overlying skin and pulls it
inwards. Tethering is where a
cancer
may be attached to the overlying skin, when you
move the lump, the skin “pulls
inwards”. Dimpling is where a
cancer invades the ligaments of Cooper, causing a
malignant fibrosis and
contraction
of the ligament, the lump is not as close to the
skin as in above but this also
pulls the skin inwards
· Inversion
or retraction of the nipple
·
Eczema of the nipple
·
Enlargement of the nodes in the
axilla or in the neck above the
collar bone ·
Enlargement of one breast
·
Enlargement of one arm
·
A discharge from the nipple
·
Skin ulcer
